Late Summer Newsletter - August 2024
Greetings, Sisters and Brothers.
The Executive Board and I hope this summer has been an enjoyable time for you and your families.
The Annual Labour Day Parade will take place on Monday, September 2, 2024. We will gather at 9:30 am at or near the corner of Stuart Street and Caroline Street. Look for our Local 1 flag to pick up your Local 1 shirt and hat. Parking is located at the West Harbour GO Station, near by streets (Tiffany Street and Caroline Street), AND at LIUNA Station. On completion of the parade, join us back at the Hall for a BBQ and refreshments. Looking forward to seeing all members and their families.
Work has been very busy with brick and stone jobs. Refractory has been very slow since the end of March. There will be significant spike with Refractory shortly with jobs at IOL (Thorcan) and AMD (Castec).
The next Niagara Information Meeting will take place Thursday September 19, 2024, in the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #17 on 3 Ormond Street South in Thorold.
I am putting a call out to any of our members who might be able to assist us with finding a new venue for our Annual Service Awards and Retirement Dinner. Sadly, the Sons of Italy King Street banquet hall is closing down. If anyone can give me a lead on a hall that will suit our needs, please give me a call.
Many of you have contacted us regarding member Christien Fletcher. We were touched with the out pouring of concern for a fellow Brother. If you would like to support Christien with his on- going recovery, his family has set up a Go Fund Me page to do so. You can donate at: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-support-to-keep-us-afloat-after-a-freak-accident. We are wishing our Brother a speedy recovery.
In our Collective Agreement and BACU Constitution, a member must be fit for duty, show up on time and respect all Sisters and Brothers who are on the job site. If an issue on the jobsite cannot be resolved by the member or members on the job site, the foreman is to be informed and will assist in resolving the issue. If the issue cannot be resolved by the foreman or if the issue is with the foreman, CALL ME. Dave Martin at the office 905-527-8418 or on my cell 905-517-0884 and I will help to resolve the issue. Advice: Stay cool. Take a breath, Think about it. Plan a course of action. Is there a compromise?
Yours in solidarity,
Dave Martin, Ryan Dickinson, Nick Scott, Sean Read and Luigi Scodellero
